When I think of graffiti, I have to admit I always think of a guy standing on a corner with a can of spray paint.  It's sad - and stereotypical - that it rarely occurs to me that the artist might be a woman - and a young teenage woman at that.  That's the novel premise of Kelly Parra's new novel "Graffiti Girl" - Angel Rodriguez is an independant young woman who's not only coming into her own as a graffiti artist but trying to figure out whether she belongs with the golden boy or the bad boy of graffiti art.

Here's our interview with Ms. Parra:

1) What is the inspiration for the book?

Basically, my love for art in high school and my friends who were into Graffiti art inspired me to write Graffiti Girl. When I was sixteen, I tried my hand at graffiti designs in what is called a "piecebook" but could never really do justice to the bold style. When I decided to write YA fiction, graffiti was the first idea to pop for me since I was familiar with art.

2) What are you working on right now?

My next YA novel is about a girl who sees psychic images on her peers, and she attempts to piece the clues together in order to save them from unfortunate fates. The paranormal aspect is new for me, so I'm excited about finished the project.

3) What is something about you that would surprise your readers?

Possibly my ethnicity. I'm half Mexican, and Filipino and Italian. Growing up, I was part of a nationality guessing game many times!
