What single woman in New York doesn't have her own collection of
stories about underperforming men? If only you could warn your fellow
unsuspecting women out there... In
Jennifer O' Connell's cool new novel,
"Insider Dating",
Abby Dunn does exactly that when she decides to turn the tables on the
opposite sex by building a database to rank all the losers out in the
dating world.
Here's our interview with Ms. O' Connell:
1) What was the inspiration for your book?
One summer afternoon I was out on our deck, flipping through People
magazine. One of those blow-ins for the Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes
fell onto my lap and I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if there was a
clearinghouse for men." The idea for INSIDER DATING came immediately, that a
woman could create a sort of clearinghouse that allowed women to share
information in a members-only club.
2) Are you working on another project?
I edited an anthology, EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT BEING A GIRL I
LEARNED FROM JUDY BLUME, and that comes out in June. It's a collection of
essays by women writers where they each recollect how Judy Blume's writing
impacted them as young girls and, ultimately, affected the women they've
become. The essays are funny and heartfelt and I loved reading every single
one of them.
3) Tell us something about yourself that would surprise your readers?
I really don't like going to the movies. I haven't been to the movies to see
a "grown up" movie since 1993, when I saw The Firm (I say "grown up" because
I really don't think seeing Shrek counts).
