When I was in college, I took a film class and as one of my
assignments, I had to watch "My Best Friend's Wedding" starring Julia
Roberts and Rupert Everett. It's one of those cute flicks that women
love because they envision having a four day wedding extravaganza one
day just like Cameron Diaz did (sans a crazy woman trying to stop the
wedding).
I experienced what one of those weddings was like
this weekend. No, no, no. I didn't get hitched but two great friends of
mine did. My cronies
Steve and Kate
walked down the aisle in New York City and I was happy to be part of
the festivities. The exchange of vows happened at some place that you
may have heard of called the United Nations. The ceremony was beautiful
and it kicked off an evening of events that included me boogying down
on the dance floor with anchorman Charles Gibson of ABC's World News
(Please no rumors! His wife Arlene was there next to us dancing with
our friend Flo Flash). Here's how the night went.
Saturday, September 304:38
PM- My friend Doc and I head to the United Nations Church Center for
the ceremony. When we first walk in, I notice a familiar face. A
radiant, middle aged blonde who looks like Diane Sawyer is
sitting in one of the front rows. Wait, it is her and next to her
is her "Good Morning America" colleague Robin Roberts. What were they
doing there? Well, they were there to see their former "GMA" co-host's
daughter Kate get hitched just like the rest of us. Doc and I go join
our other friends and await for the bride and groom to take the stage.
Kate walks in with Charlie and Arlene. The trio looks dapper and
ready. The Petyeraks await and the "I do's" are said. Congratulations
to them! Time to drink and party. Rock, scotch and roll!
5:30
PM- Old colleagues and I stand on line outside the UN. Everyone must go
through security check to get into the building . A group of Asian
tourists get out their van and think we are important people
(delegates maybe?!)having a party or something and start snapping their
photos. Doc turns around, laughs and says to me "Asians".

7:00
PM - Sipping my third cocktail, I catch up with some of
my producer friends in the business. I clue them in on all the latest
news about China Dolls. I tell them about how we are working together
with Ling, etc. They are all thrilled for me but I think I got the
biggest reaction out of them when I told them that Blossom and I just
received word that St. Martin's has signed us on to write two more
books. Yay!! This was the great news that we have been hinting in our
past few posts (if you haven't caught on yet) but couldn't say anything
until it was officially confirmed. It's confirmed now! Woo-hoo!!
10:23
PM - By now, I've already had my delicious lamb entree for dinner. The
time arrived for me to burn off all the delicious food I had
scarfed down during the evening. "It's raining men" is blasting
and my table along with everyone else takes to the dance
floor. Two of the guys I rolled with broke down some ground
rules with me and said I wasn't allowed to leave the dance floor
without them. Apparently, two men dancing together was a no-no to them.
I suppose that's a bad mental image. I see Charlie G boogying with his
wife. The Gibsons love to dance!Flo Flash chimes in and boogies down
with Arlene. I take CG's lead and we start doing some locomotion move.
It was a lovely time.
11:07 PM - It's all over and we all start to trickle out of the United Nations after a delightful evening.
1:00
AM (Oct. 1) - Back to my apartment. I couldn't sleep. My
voice was raspy from singing off the top of my lungs to Bon Jovi songs.
I start to do some late night writing. Then I start thinking about the
next big party that I will be attending and I realize that in less than
six months, I will be having my own book launch party. I begin to
think of all the planning that needs to get done. Invitations, props,
furniture, the whole nine yards. Thinking about all of it exhausted me
but I realize that it's so exciting to even anticipate all of it. Our
"China Dolls" gift sets were sent out to magazine editors last week so
the publicity campaign has officially begun in the beauty world! We're
crossing our fingers.
Hopefully, my fortune cookie that I got
this week foreshadows what is to come. It read "You are one of those
people that are "going places in life". I hope it means a ticket
to join the elite chicklit authors club one day!
Until next time....that's all folks.
